Thursday, April 7 – First Trip to Supermarket and Getting a Rav Kav (Bus Pass)
Shula
offered to take me to the supermarket in anticipation of her departure. Not
having a car, she thought it wise to help me get my first allotment of survival
groceries. I had to buy bottled water because tap water is not recommended, and
carrying several litters of water on the bus would be near to impossible.
In
the afternoon she also offered to take me to the central bus station so that I
could get a bus pass (Rav Kav.) This bus
pass is connected to the identity card, and once issued one can load the card
as needed aboard any public bus. Drivers carry the technology to allow for this
transaction spotlessly, which I found most interesting. I was given the senior
rate of 3 shekels per trip, instead of 5.90 shekels.
This
afternoon I spent four hours walking down town with the idea to finally get to
the famous Dizengoff District. I wandered through streets fearlessly with a
sense of curiosity, had coffee and a pastry, and came home aboard Bus 204, not
before getting a bit lost and confused, but safe. In the evening I met Ilana,
Shula’s friend. I was hungry, so I made myself a lovely salad and a cup of tea,
well aware that the next day Shula was leaving early on her trip to the US.
