Today
was a very productive day. By
mid-morning I headed off to Dizengoff Street with the idea to visit Misrad
Haklita (Ministry of Aliyah and Absorption). I had called them the week before,
hoping to get an appointment. Since I hadn’t heard from them, I thought of
dropping in. I am glad I did, because I was able to meet with a counsellor and
get my Ulpan vouchers and financial data processed. I was offered a choice of
two different Ulpans, each with pros and cons, and I chose the larger and more
established Ulpan Gordon, where I thought I would have a broader social
experience and networking. I am thrilled
that soon I will be able to start the Ulpan, a wish I have had for a very long
time, and especially when I studied Hebrew at the Jewish Community Center. While I have had some great teachers, I
thought that learning Hebrew in an Israeli Ulpan would be more effective,
intensive and focused. Time will tell if
I am able to manage this self-prescribed package.
I
an attempt to update my Tel Aviv address in one of my ID cards, I headed off to
the office tower that houses several Government Ministries, including the
Ministry of Interior. To my dismay, the line-up
was huge, and I was asked to present two photographs that I had to get in the
lower floor. When I returned to the
line-up I realized that there were over 35 folks ahead of me, and I decided to leave,
as I was tired, hungry and lacked the energy to wait. I learned that at this office
also handles visas, passports, and identity cards. I supposed that the line-up
had something to do with the summer approaching, and the many visitors and
tourists that pour in and out of the Country.
